One pair of numbers frames the whole season. In October 2025, Gallup found Americans expected to spend $1,007 on holiday gifts. By November, that estimate had fallen to $778 (Gallup, Economic Confidence Slips; Holiday Spending Plans Plummet, December 2025). That $229 drop was the largest midseason decline Gallup has recorded, bigger than the $185 fall in 2008. Budgets don't just start tight. They tighten as the season goes on, which is exactly when the search for extra money starts.

Can You Actually Make Money for Christmas Playing Games?

A little, and probably less than you're hoping for if you start this fall. Our illustrative earnings model, built from player-reported outcomes and platform data, puts new players at break-even to slightly negative for their first 30 days. Players between 30 and 90 days in make roughly $0 to $50 a month (Atay Games, illustrative earnings model, 2026). Some experienced players report $200 to $500 a month after day 90. That's real, but it isn't typical, and many players never get there.

Put that next to the rest of the side-income world and it stops looking unusual. In 2025, Bankrate found only 27% of US adults had a side hustle at all, the lowest share since 2017. The median side hustler earned $200 a month, and 28% of them made between $1 and $50 (Bankrate, side hustle survey, July 2025). A developing skill-game player sits squarely in that bottom band. So does almost anyone who started something recently.

Can you make money for Christmas playing skill games? Only modestly. New players are break-even to slightly negative in their first 30 days, and players 30 to 90 days in earn about $0 to $50 a month (Atay Games, illustrative earnings model, 2026). In 2025 the median US side hustle paid $200 a month (Bankrate).

Don't mix up two kinds of app. Passive reward apps, which pay you to watch ads or try other games, cap out around $5 to $40 a month. Why Is Starting in October Already Starting Late?

Because the skill curve runs on months and the holiday season runs on weeks. In 2025, Deloitte found shoppers expected 24% of their holiday budgets to be spent by the end of October, the highest share in five years (Deloitte, Holiday Spending Declines Amid Economic Uncertainty, October 2025). Download a cash game on October 15 and Christmas Day is day 71. You'd still be in the developing stage.

Here's the part the Christmas side-hustle lists we read leave out, because it costs them the click. The best month to start a skill game for holiday money is January. Give yourself 90 days to learn and the rest of the year to see how you actually do. Then by next December you'll know whether it can add anything to the gift budget, instead of finding out in a panic.

Does that make ten weeks worthless? No. It changes what ten weeks are for:

• Learning one game in free mode, with no deposit and nothing at risk.

What's the Last Day to Cash Out Before Christmas?

For a bank transfer, aim for Friday, December 18, 2026. Monday, December 21 is the absolute last day, and only if you request it early. For PayPal, Apple Pay or a gift card, you technically have until Christmas Eve, but give yourself a day. On Atay, most withdrawals process within minutes, and bank transfers may take up to 1 to 3 business days depending on your bank (Atay Games FAQ, 2026). This year Christmas falls on a Friday, and banks are closed.

Do a $5 Test Withdrawal Before Thanksgiving

Your first withdrawal is the slow one, because it can take longer while your payout account is verified. Larger payouts may also need a one-time identity check. So if you already have a cash balance, withdraw $5 by Friday, November 20, while nothing is riding on it. On Atay the minimum is $5 and there's no withdrawal fee. One catch: cashing out forfeits any unused bonus cash, so use that first. If your name or payout account has a problem, you'll find out in November instead of the week before Christmas.

Three Things That Quietly Blow the Deadline

• Deposited money usually has to be played first. Many apps won't release a deposit that hasn't been used in a match, so a fresh deposit isn't instantly withdrawable.
• Your payout name has to match your ID. A PayPal account under a nickname, or a partner's bank account, gets rejected. That costs days you don't have in late December.

Can You Get Paid in Gift Cards Instead of Cash?

Yes. On Atay, winnings can be withdrawn to a bank account, PayPal, Apple Pay, or as a gift card (Atay Games FAQ, 2026). For holiday money it's often the smartest option. A gift card payout doesn't need to clear a bank, and it doesn't need to be turned into a present later. It already is one.

It also matches what people actually give. Yes, even if no form ever arrives. Prize income is reportable at any amount. The forms kick in much higher. For 2026, the federal Form 1099-K threshold is more than $20,000 and 200 transactions, though some states set lower ones. Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC start at $2,000 for payments after December 31, 2025 (Internal Revenue Service, IR-2025-107 and Fact Sheet 2025-08, October 2025).

Skill-game prizes are usually reported in Box 3 of a 1099-MISC and go on Schedule 1, line 8i. Some platform terms still reference the old $600 figure, so a form can show up below the new floor. Either way, the tax owed is the same.

Do you owe tax on skill game winnings spent on holiday gifts? Yes. Prize income is reportable at any amount, even without a form. For 2026, federal Form 1099-K requires more than $20,000 and 200 transactions, while Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC start at $2,000 (Internal Revenue Service, Fact Sheet 2025-08). The holiday wrinkle is timing. Money you win on December 20 is 2026 income, even if it's wrapped and under a tree by the 24th.
