In the 2025 holiday season, gift cards ranked as the second-most popular gift, according to the National Retail Federation. Plenty of new phones get switched on next to an Apple or App Store gift card. Atay Games' cash matches run on Skillz, operated by Firy Inc (NYSE: FIRY, formerly SKLZ). Here's why that card can't fund them, what can, and what the card is still good for.
No. An Apple Gift Card or App Store card becomes Apple Account balance, and Apple's App Review Guideline 5.3.3 says apps "may not use in-app purchase to purchase credit or currency for use in conjunction with real money gaming of any kind." Skillz's help center lists a card, PayPal, Apple Pay and, in the US, a linked bank instead.

Can you use an Apple gift card on Skillz?
No. Apple gift cards add to your Apple Account balance, which pays for apps, subscriptions and in-app purchases (Apple Support). Apple's App Review Guideline 5.3.3 bars apps from using in-app purchase "to purchase credit or currency for use in conjunction with real money gaming of any kind," so Skillz cash deposits run through cards, PayPal, Apple Pay or a bank.
Apple's current card is the Apple Gift Card, but older ones still turn up in stockings. Apple's redeem page names all three: the Apple Gift Card, the App Store Card and the App Store & iTunes Gift Card. Redeeming any of them adds "funds to your Apple Account balance."
That balance is Apple money. It buys "apps, games, or in-app purchases from the App Store," subscriptions and Apple products (Apple Support). Apple's scam page puts it bluntly: "Apple gift cards can be used only to purchase products and services from Apple."
A cash game can't take it like an ordinary in-app purchase. Apple's App Review Guidelines, last updated June 8, 2026, rule that out in Guideline 5.3.3, quoted above. A cash deposit goes through a payment method Skillz accepts, never through the App Store, so your balance can't reach it.
Skillz's deposit article lists them: "We currently accept deposits via credit card, PayPal, and Apple Pay." US players can also link a bank through Aeropay. Your game's deposit screen shows which of these it offers.
What we checked, and how. On September 23, 2026, we read the App Store listings of all 12 of our cash games. None offers in-app purchases, so there's nothing inside them for an Apple Account balance to buy. We also searched all 119 English articles in Skillz's help center for "gift." None lists an App Store, Apple or Google Play gift card as a deposit method.
Isn't Apple Pay the same thing as my gift card balance?
Apple Pay and Apple Account balance are different wallets. Apple Pay charges a debit or credit card saved in Wallet, and Skillz lists Apple Pay as an iPhone deposit method. Apple's gift card terms say gift cards "cannot be used for purchases in combination with Apple Pay or PayPal," and Apple Cash can't be topped up from one.
This is where most of the confusion starts. Your iPhone holds three separate kinds of money, and they don't blend.
- Apple Pay is your real cards. Apple's setup guide says: "To set up Apple Pay, add a debit or credit card to the Wallet app." Pay with it, and the card behind it is charged.
- Apple Account balance is your gift card money. It can even show up in Wallet as a card. But Apple's gift card terms say that Virtual Card "can be used at Apple Retail Stores," and that gift cards "cannot be used for purchases in combination with Apple Pay or PayPal."
- Apple Cash is a third, separate account, provided by Green Dot Bank. A gift card can't top it up: "You can't add money from a gift card, even if it's already in Wallet" (Apple Support).
The developer side makes this clearer. In a Skillz game, Apple Pay is set up as a merchant card payment. Skillz's developer guide says "Apple Pay requires that you create a Merchant ID that will be associated with your app's bundle ID," plus a payment processing certificate. That setup charges the card in your Wallet. It has no link to your Apple Account balance.
Because each game sets Apple Pay up separately, check your own game's deposit screen for it. As for Apple Cash, we couldn't confirm whether Skillz accepts it, so don't plan around it.

Three Wallets on One iPhone
What about a Visa or Mastercard gift card?
A bank-issued prepaid card is different. Skillz's help center says "You can deposit with a prepaid card if you choose," but warns that withdrawals return to that card first, and "If you don't have this card, your withdrawal may be forfeit." Keep the card until you've cashed out, and expect a $1.50 charge on any withdrawal under $10.
A prepaid Visa or Mastercard isn't store credit. It's a bank-issued card, not a balance locked inside one company's store. In 2025, the NRF found most holiday shoppers planned to pick "a restaurant, bank-issued or department store gift card." Of those, only the bank-issued kind is the prepaid card Skillz's help center covers.
Skillz's help article on prepaid gift cards asks you to keep the card, because your funds "will first return to your deposit method (in this case your prepaid card)."
The usual deposit rules apply too, per Skillz's withdrawals article:
- Deposited money must be played in matches once before you can withdraw it.
- Withdrawals up to your deposits go back to your deposit method, oldest deposit first.
- There's "a $1.50 charge for any withdrawals under $10."
Whether your card goes through depends on its issuer, so check the card's terms. One caution: gift money meant for something else shouldn't quietly turn into entry fees.
Does a Google Play gift card work on Android?
No. Google Play gift cards "must be redeemed toward the purchase of eligible products" on Google Play. Atay's Android cash games don't come from Google Play; they install as an APK from the studio's official website. So there is no Google Play purchase for a Play balance to cover.
Google's gift card terms (last updated May 1, 2019) also say Play cards are "not redeemable for cash or other cards." Their value stays inside Google Play.

Why do cash games keep store credit out?
Two published rules keep store credit out. Apple's Guideline 5.3.3 keeps in-app purchase away from real-money gaming, and Skillz sends withdrawals up to your deposits back "using the same form of payment as your deposit." Apple's terms say gift cards "are not redeemable for cash," so store credit has no route back out to you.
Apple's rule covers "real money gaming of any kind," which takes in paid-entry skill tournaments. That's Apple's wording, and it's the reason the App Store can't sell cash-game credit.
There's a practical side too, and this part is our reading, not a reason Apple or Skillz states. Money in a cash game has to be able to come back out. Skillz's User Terms (section 8.5) say withdrawals are "made by check or by refund to the payment method used to make your deposit." Apple's terms say gift cards can't be cashed, "exchanged; resold." A store balance can't take a refund or a payout, so the rails don't fit.
Identity matters as well. Section 8.3 asks cash players to keep "your full name, your permanent residential address, your phone number and your credit card or other payment information" on file. For where the prize money comes from, see how entry fees fund cash prizes.
What can you do with the gift card instead?
Spend it where Apple allows: apps, games, in-app purchases, subscriptions such as Apple Arcade or iCloud+, and Apple products (Apple Support). Don't sell or swap it, since Apple's terms say gift cards can't be "exchanged; resold." If a cash game is what you wanted, its free practice mode needs no deposit, so learn the game first.
Apple's list also covers music, movies and books. The same page adds two limits. "Some purchases might require that you have a credit card on file," and you "can't use your Apple Account balance to send gifts or gift cards."
Just don't let it sit. In 2024, a Bankrate survey of 2,373 US adults found 43% held at least one unused gift card, voucher or store credit, with an average of $244 unused per person. And 34% had lost gift card value to expiration, a lost card or a store closing. Apple's terms also say you "must spend any Associated Balance in order to close your Account."

Is someone asking you for gift card codes to unlock winnings?
Anyone asking for gift card codes to release your winnings is running a scam. The FTC says "No real business or government agency will ever tell you to buy a gift card to pay them." In 2024, 41,120 fraud reports named a gift card or reload card as the payment method, with $212 million reported lost (FTC Consumer Sentinel).
Apple's gift card scam page (published June 24, 2026) lays out the pattern. Scammers reach you by call, text, email or social media. They "Create a sense of panic and urgency," walk you through buying cards step by step, then "Demand gift card redemption code(s)." Apple's test: "If someone asks you to use Apple gift cards to purchase something not sold by Apple, you might be the target of a scam."
In game apps, a fake "win money" app or message says your winnings are ready, but first you must send a gift card code for a "fee," "tax" or "verification." Legitimate platforms never ask for gift card codes. Skillz lists no gift card method for deposits or withdrawals. The 2024 figures above come from the FTC's Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book 2024. For 2025, the FTC told Congress's Joint Economic Committee in March 2026 testimony that consumers filed 3 million fraud reports and reported $15.9 billion in losses. It hadn't published a 2025 gift card breakdown as of September 23, 2026.
Already sent a code? Contact the card company right away. For Apple cards, Apple says to call 800-275-2273 (U.S.) and say "gift cards" when prompted. Then report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
What should you check before a first deposit?
Before any deposit, check three things: you're 18 or older, which Skillz requires even to download; cash play is allowed where you are; and you know how money comes back. Withdrawals up to your deposits return to the method you deposited with, and US winnings above that arrive by paper check or at an Aeropay-linked bank.
- Age. Skillz's User Terms (section 1.3.1) require you to be at least 18 "to register an Account, to participate in any Competition or receive Services, and/or to download Software." All 12 of our cash games are rated 18+ on the App Store. A teen's App Store card has no place in cash play.
- Location. Cash play isn't open everywhere, so check where cash play is allowed before you start.
- How money comes back. Withdrawals up to your deposits go back to your deposit method, oldest first. US winnings above that go by paper check, and Skillz tells players to "expect their withdrawals in 4-6 weeks." An Aeropay-linked bank usually takes under 24 business hours. - Bonus cash. It can't be withdrawn, it's forfeited when you withdraw, and it's also forfeited after 60 days without a cash match (User Terms section 8.4). Here's why bonus cash never withdraws.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an App Store gift card to buy anything inside Atay's cash games?
No. Apple's App Review Guideline 5.3.3 says apps "may not use in-app purchase to purchase credit or currency for use in conjunction with real money gaming of any kind." An Apple Account balance only pays Apple, and none of the App Store listings for Atay's 12 cash games offers in-app purchases, so there's nothing in them for it to buy.
Can I add my Apple gift card to Apple Pay?
No. Apple Pay uses the debit or credit cards in your Wallet, not your Apple Account balance, and Apple's gift card terms say gift cards "cannot be used for purchases in combination with Apple Pay or PayPal." Where a game offers Apple Pay for deposits, it charges a real card saved in Wallet, never your gift card balance.
Can I move my Apple gift card balance to Apple Cash or my bank?
No. Apple's terms say gift cards "are not redeemable for cash" and can't be "exchanged; resold," and Apple's Apple Cash page says "You can't add money from a gift card, even if it's already in Wallet." Keep the code private, and spend the balance on apps, subscriptions or Apple products instead.
Can I cash out Skillz winnings as a gift card?
Skillz doesn't list gift cards as a payout option. Withdrawals up to your deposits go back to the method you deposited with. US winnings above that go by paper check, which Skillz says to expect in 4 to 6 weeks, or to an Aeropay-linked bank, usually in under 24 business hours. Withdrawals under $10 cost $1.50.
Can I use a Visa gift card on Skillz?
It can work. Skillz says "You can deposit with a prepaid card if you choose," but withdrawals go back to that card first, and without it "your withdrawal may be forfeit." Whether a particular gift card is accepted depends on its issuer, so check the card's terms and keep the card until your balance is withdrawn.
My teenager got an App Store card. Can they play for cash?
No. Skillz's User Terms (section 1.3.1) require players to be 18 or older to register, compete or even download the software, and all 12 of our cash games are rated 18+ on the App Store. A teen's App Store card is better spent on apps, games or subscriptions that fit their age.
