You tapped Withdraw expecting winnings, and your card statement showed a refund, a pending line, or what looked like a new charge. Atay Games' cash matches run on Skillz, operated by Firy Inc (NYSE: FIRY, formerly SKLZ), so Skillz's payout rules decide where each dollar lands. Your money probably isn't missing. It split, and here's exactly how.
It's Skillz's payout rule. Withdrawals "up to the amount of your total deposits" go back "using the same form of payment as your deposit, either PayPal or credit card, in order of oldest to newest deposits made." US winnings above that come by paper check. A surprise second card line after a deposit is usually a temporary authorization hold.

What does the policy actually say?
In 2026, Skillz help article 203685739 says withdrawals up to your total deposits go back to the PayPal account or card you deposited with, oldest deposit first. US winnings above that are "sent via paper check." Skillz's User Terms (May 22, 2025) call this a "refund to the payment method used to make your deposit."

In plain English: the part of a withdrawal that matches what you put in goes back where it came from, oldest deposit first. Only money you won on top of that is paid another way. It isn't a glitch, and it isn't a choice Atay makes. It's Skillz's published rule.
Two gaps are worth knowing. On fees, the help center says $1.50 on withdrawals under $10; the terms allow "up to $2.00." On timing, the help center says to expect 4-6 weeks, often less; the terms allow "up to ninety (90) days."
What we checked. On September 26, 2026, we re-read these help articles through Skillz's public help-center API, and the User Terms on skillz.com. We also compared the withdrawal article with the July 2026 copy Skillz wrote for its separate Skillz Arena app (article 50570113211540). The routing sentence is identical. We don't apply the Arena copy's other details here.
Where does each dollar of your Skillz withdrawal go?
Think of a 2026 Skillz withdrawal as two buckets. The first refunds your deposits to the card or PayPal you used, oldest deposit first. The second, anything above your total deposits, reaches US players by paper check, per Skillz help article 203685739. Bonus cash is forfeited the moment you withdraw, and Skillz charges $1.50 on any withdrawal under $10.

Deposited with Apple Pay? Skillz's deposit article lists it, but the routing sentence names only PayPal and credit card. Apple says a merchant refund "goes back to your payment card automatically," so the card behind Apple Pay is the likely destination. Skillz doesn't confirm it.
How a Skillz Withdrawal Splits
A worked example: $20 by card, $10 by PayPal, $75 balance
Illustrative. Built from Skillz's published rules, not from a real account. Here's what we assumed:
- A1. You're a US player in a state where cash play is available.
- A2. Deposit 1: $20 on a Visa card (card A) on January 5. Deposit 2: $10 through PayPal on January 12. So card A is the oldest.
- A3. Both deposits have been played in matches at least once, so the whole balance is eligible.
- A4. Your balance is $75.00 in cash plus $2.00 in Bonus Cash.
- A5. No earlier withdrawals, so all $30 of deposits is still owed back. (Skillz doesn't publish how it tracks deposits already refunded.)
- A6. You withdraw the full $75.00, with no bank linked.
- A7. Card A is still open and in your name.

The $75 Withdrawal in the Worked Example, by Destination
Three variants, one line each:
- Withdraw $25 instead: $20 to card A and $5 to PayPal, no check. The other $50 stays in your balance, and the $2 Bonus Cash is still forfeited. We won't predict your next withdrawal, since Skillz doesn't publish how it counts refunded deposits.
- Withdraw $8: all $8 goes to card A, and the $1.50 charge for withdrawals under $10 applies. The terms call it a "check request processing fee," and Skillz doesn't say how it's taken from a card refund, so we won't print a net figure.
- Card A was a prepaid gift card you threw away: Skillz says the withdrawal "may be forfeit," so contact Skillz first. See gift and prepaid cards on Skillz.
What should you do right now?
Start with your Skillz balance history, filtered to deposits and withdrawals, to see what actually moved. As of September 2026, Skillz article 203685739 says you can cancel a pending withdrawal from the Withdraw menu and can't deposit while one is pending. Then look for a pending credit on your card or PayPal, and confirm the mailing address for any check.
Menu labels below are Skillz's wording and can vary by game and app version.
- Check your balance history. Skillz's path is the main menu, then Account, then Account Balance; filter by "deposits/withdrawals" (article 204372965).
- Sort each line into a bucket. Match the amounts to your deposits, oldest first.
- Find the card-side line. Look for a Skillz credit, pending or posted, or a refund in PayPal. Paid with Apple Pay? Apple says "Your physical card number and your Apple Pay card number are different," so check the card in Wallet.
- Confirm your mailing address if part of the withdrawal is winnings above your deposits. Checks go "to the mailing address that you have submitted through the Skillz app" (article 115001117486).
- Changed your mind? Cancel from the Withdraw menu, or send support "your User ID number and the amount and date of the withdrawal request."
- Deposited by mistake? Don't play it yet. For players in cash-disabled areas, Skillz says "deposits cannot be directly refunded if any funds have been used to enter cash matches" (article 204372905). Open a ticket right away and ask for a review. The terms say "no refunds are given" unless the law requires one (§8.8).
- Lost the prepaid card, or closed the card you deposited with? Contact Skillz before you withdraw.

The fields follow Skillz's contact article. For withdrawals, it asks for "the withdrawal ID" from your confirmation email and "the exact dollar amount." For payments, it asks for "your type of card, last 4 digits, deposit amount, and date of purchase." Never send a full card number.
Why does this happen?
Skillz's User Terms, unchanged as of September 2026, say withdrawals are processed "by check or by refund to the payment method used to make your deposit" and "may take up to ninety (90) days." Skillz says it reviews gameplay and account histories and processes each withdrawal manually, so it tells players to expect 4 to 6 weeks.
The key word is refund. The deposit part of a withdrawal comes home as a merchant refund, not a payout. That's why your card shows a credit, and why it can look like your deposit was simply reversed.
Skillz doesn't publish why deposits are paid back first, and we won't guess. It does explain the wait. "Since we issue checks for winnings, we take time to review gameplay and account histories," says article 204372895, and 203685739 adds, "We manually process each withdrawal to ensure safety and security."
Speeds also differ between players: Skillz's loyalty-program article says "processing times may vary depending on your account history." That's one reason a friend's withdrawal may land sooner.
Two timing figures, measuring different things. Article 203685739, edited in February 2026, tells players to "expect their withdrawals in 4-6 weeks." Skillz's check-status article, text from April 2022, says "Withdrawal checks typically take 1-2 weeks to arrive," and to write in if one hasn't come "4 weeks after receiving confirmation that your withdrawal has been processed."
Read together, the 1-2 weeks looks like mail time after processing, not a shorter total, though Skillz doesn't say so outright. Plan around 4-6 weeks. The terms allow up to 90 days and let Skillz delay a withdrawal pending an investigation or eligibility check.
What Skillz's Documents Say About Timing, in Weeks
A pending withdrawal isn't a pending match result, which has its own rules. Tax questions about the check part? See taxes on Skillz winnings under $2,000.
Why does it show up as a charge on your statement?
In 2026, Skillz says a surprise second line after a deposit is usually "a temporary hold the bank places on your credit or debit card," which clears "in 1-3 business days." Its terms add that a credit card deposit triggers an authorization "of at least Ten U.S. Dollars (US$10.00)," so a small one can briefly look bigger.
An authorization hold is your bank checking that the money exists before the deposit settles. Visa puts it plainly: a hold "isn’t a charge, but it sets aside that amount," and "it may take a few days for the money to become available again." Skillz's hold article says that once the deposit settles, "the authorization disappears."

A common mix-up is the refund itself. It comes from Skillz, the company that took your deposit, so at a glance it reads like another charge. Check the sign: PayPal's explainer says a card refund "appears as a credit on the cardholder's statement." Skillz doesn't publish the name a refund shows under.
Sometimes the new line really is a charge. In May 2026, a player on Reddit's r/Skillz said they'd made a $7 deposit they thought was a withdrawal. A May 2025 App Store review of one of our own games described a $12 deposit made the same way. If that's you, see step 6 above.
The real red flag is an app that makes you pay before it releases your winnings. Skillz's $1.50 is a published charge on withdrawals under $10, not an upfront payment to unlock your money. If any app asks you to send money before it pays you, don't send it.
How do you stop it happening again?
Deposit only with a payment method you'll still have when you cash out. In 2026, Skillz's prepaid-card article warns that withdrawals return to that card first and "If you don't have this card, your withdrawal may be forfeit." Its terms ask you to report an expired or canceled card promptly, and withdrawals under $10 carry a $1.50 fee.
- Pick a deposit method you'll keep. Your deposits come back to it, so skip cards you plan to close and prepaid or gift cards you'll throw away.
- Keep card details current. Terms §8.10 says you "must promptly notify us" if your "credit card expires or is canceled for any reason." Switching from iPhone to Android? Apple Pay doesn't come with you, so read moving your account to a new phone first.
- Withdraw $10 or more when you can. Skillz's $1.50 charge applies only under $10. A May 2025 App Store review of one of our own games complained about being charged to withdraw, so check the amount before you confirm.
- Expect Bonus Cash to vanish when you withdraw. It's forfeited either way.
- Keep your mailing address current before you request a withdrawal, as Skillz recommends.
- Slow down in the wallet. Confirm the screen says Withdraw, not Deposit, before you enter an amount.
- Bank option? If your withdrawal screen offers one, Skillz says standard Aeropay transfers are US-only and usually arrive "in <24 business hours." It doesn't say whether that changes where the deposit part goes, so check your own screen. Our bank-linking guide is coming soon.
When should you contact support, and what can't anyone promise?
Contact Skillz Player Support if a check hasn't arrived 4 weeks after Skillz confirms your withdrawal was processed, the point Skillz's check-status article names. Report any charge you don't recognize within 120 days, as Skillz's terms require. In 2026, no one can promise when a refund appears, because your card issuer or PayPal controls the last step.
Write in when:
- A check is missing 4 weeks after Skillz confirmed processing.
- A card or PayPal credit hasn't appeared well after Skillz confirmed it. Ask Skillz for the date and amount sent, then ask your card company or PayPal. For its own refunds, PayPal says debit cards "generally take up to 5 business days" (some "up to 30 days") and credit cards "up to 1 and 2 billing cycles."
- A prepaid or closed card is involved. Skillz doesn't publish what it does next.
- A line you truly don't recognize. The terms say "You must tell us within 120 days after an error first appears on your bill."
Player reports show stated times and routes can still surprise people. App Store reviews of other Skillz-powered games describe a check that took about 6 weeks (October 2024) and bank withdrawals still waiting days past the quoted time (November 2025, February 2026). Another asked why winnings went to a card unused for 7 months (September 2026). These are player reports, not data.
What no one can promise. No one, including us, can promise a refund, a faster payout, or a date. Skillz decides withdrawals under its terms, and your card company or PayPal controls the last step.
What if a charge wasn't you?
If a charge truly wasn't you, call your card issuer or bank too. For bank and debit accounts, the CFPB says your bank "generally has ten business days to investigate," and you must report "within 60 days after your bank or credit union sends your statement."
Don't dispute a deposit you made yourself. Skillz's terms say "any failure by you to honor legitimate charges or requests for payment, will result in immediate termination of your Account, forfeiture of Winnings." A ticket is the safer route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Skillz withdrawal go to my card instead of PayPal?
Because you deposited with that card first. Skillz sends withdrawals up to your total deposits back to the payment method you deposited with, "in order of oldest to newest deposits made." PayPal only gets money if you also deposited through PayPal, and only after your older card deposits have been paid back.
Why did Skillz send me a check?
In the US, Skillz sends "Winnings exceeding your total deposit amount" by paper check to the mailing address in the app. Skillz says to expect withdrawals in 4 to 6 weeks, often sooner, and says checks typically take 1 to 2 weeks to arrive. If your game offers a bank option, Skillz says those go directly to your bank.
Why is there a second charge after my deposit?
Usually it's an authorization hold, not a second deposit. Skillz says the bank places a temporary hold at deposit time that "will clear itself in 1-3 business days." Skillz's terms add that a credit card deposit can trigger an authorization request of at least $10, even when the deposit itself is smaller.
How long until the refund shows on my card?
There are two steps. Skillz processes the withdrawal first and tells players to expect 4 to 6 weeks, though often it's quicker. Then your card company or PayPal posts the credit. Apple says Apple Pay refunds "might take several days" to appear, and for its own refunds PayPal quotes up to 5 business days for debit cards.
What if I no longer have the card I deposited with?
Contact Skillz Player Support before you withdraw. Skillz says withdrawals return to your deposit method first, and for prepaid cards, "If you don't have this card, your withdrawal may be forfeit." Its terms ask you to tell Skillz promptly if a card expires or is canceled. Skillz doesn't publish what happens after that.
Is there a fee to withdraw?
Only on small withdrawals. Skillz's help center says "there is a $1.50 charge for any withdrawals under $10," and its terms allow up to $2.00. Bonus cash isn't a fee, but it is forfeited whenever you make a withdrawal, so check your balance before you tap Withdraw.
